2014 Student Design Competition: Lighter than Air UAV

Competition included scaled prototypes of heavy-lift drones
This was an international competition of university-level engineering students. Teams were to design, build, and fly a scaled-down prototype of an experimental multirotor UAV. The competition's fly route included going through a 3D obstacle course while carrying a cargo, releasing the payload in a specific area, and then returning safely back to the beginning of the route. The team of would-be engineers from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo placed second in this prestigious competition and received a
$300 award. Organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) with major funding provided by Boeing.

(Excerpt) "...[Cal Poly's] pilot, mechanical engineering student Garrett Gudgel, was visibly nervous in the hours leading up to the one-time competition flight...
But during the nerve-wracking route... Gudgel skillfully navigated the craft through an obstacle course of hoops and wickets, hovered over the target drop zone and set free the cargo, a bag of sand. He then returned the craft to the starting point; if he hadn’t, the team would have been disqualified.
...The competition included 21 high-powered teams from China, France, India, Peru, Turkey and... [America.]"

(Excert) "The use of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) has proved to be very efficient. They not only save the pilot from being placed in harm's way but the expense is much lower. There are uses of UAV's that have been identified. An example of one of those uses would be to observe a forest fire to provide information so the Forrest Service can determine the best way to fight the fire.
...[Also:] Delivering aid, including clean water, food, fuel, and medical supplies to places [often in hazardous conditions after a disaster]... is a difficult task, as transporting bulk materials over uneven and rough terrain, in tight spaces, and over long distances is often required to help those in need."
