MTB Santa Barbara: Downtown & Waterfront Electric Shuttles

Two Routes Near the Amtrak Train Station in Santa Barbara
Downtown: State Street
Waterfront: Shoreline/Cabrillo Blvd.

Amtrak Train Station in Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara's train station is located directly adjacent to State Street. Also, the station is approximately 2-1/2 blocks from where State Street intersects Cabrillo Blvd. at the Stern's Wharf Pier on the beach. Access from the train station to both MTD electric shuttle routes is easily walkable -- a fortuitous discovery on our recent Amtrak California Day Trip: San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara Round-Trip.

(Excerpt) "[The] two MTD electric shuttle routes serve the Downtown... and the Waterfront... daily for 50 cents per ride, children under 45 inches ride free. Plus, a free transfer [between the two routes] is available... ask the driver for a Shuttle Transfer."

Running on approximately perdendicular routes along two heavily traveled streets, the open-air all-electric shuttle (small) bus vehicles have 10 to 30 minute scheduled intervals at designated stop locations for passenger loading and unloading. Both arterials have been designed and developed with nearly continuous adjacent pedestrian sidewalks/walkways.

The Downtown route runs along State Street nearly perpendicular to the beach and straight inland from the Stern's Wharf Pier on the beach.

The Waterfront route runs along Shoreline/Cabrillo Blvd. nearly parallel to the beach.  The Waterfront route crosses State Street at the Stern's Wharf Pier on the beach. Near the Waterfront route's western end is the Santa Barbara Harbor.

(Excerpt) "MTD Santa Barbara currently operates only 20 [all-electric shuttles]... Their first battery powered electric shuttles were acquired between 1991-1994. In the year 2000 MDT Santa Barbara picked up another 13 battery powered Ebus Electric Shuttles."

Outrigger Canoe

The selection of human-powered paddle-craft available to rent on the waterfront in this apparent paradise may not have been advertised as Hawaiian alternative modes of transportation. However, this beached outrigger canoe did contribute to our illusion of being in Honolulu while visiting Santa Barbara.
