Life's Been Good: what one wishes?

"Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh (Duration - 8:56 min.)
Satirical classic rock song with a type of insightfulness; comedically shrewd cultural commentary that shows a value beyond entertainment. It may in fact be a lifestyle anthem that wisely sums up what some righteously do NOT wish for.

A cut from the 1978 album: "But Seriously, Folks..."

MEDIA CREDIT: Youtube.com

Song lyrics for "Life's Been Good:"

I have a mansion, forget the price
Ain't never been there, they tell me it's nice
I live in hotels, tear out the walls
I have accountants pay for it all

They say I'm crazy but I have a good time
I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime
Life's been good to me so far

My Maserati does one-eighty-five
I lost my license, now I don't drive
I have a limo, ride in the back
I lock the doors in case I'm attacked

I make hit records, my fans they can't wait
They write me letters, tell me I'm great
So I got me an office, gold records on the wall
Just leave a message, maybe I'll call

Lucky I'm sane after all I've been through...
I can't complain but sometimes I still do
Life's been good to me so far

I go to parties, sometimes until four
It's hard to leave when you can't find the door
It's tough to handle this fortune and fame
Everybody's so different, I haven't changed

They say I'm lazy but it takes all my time...
I keep on going, guess I'll never know why
Life's been good to me so far
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Pacific Heights Mansion in San Francisco

Bourne Mansion: 'English Townhouse,' SF Historical Landmark #38

San Francisco Historical Landmark #38 is a majestic century-old mansion, an elaborate edifice of local ‘clinker bricks,' standing firmly in the highest part of the well-located Pacific Heights neighborhood.

Circa 1894-1897, William Bowers Bourn II commissioned architect Willis J. Polk to create an ‘English townhouse’ where he could stay and entertain when he was in The City. This mansion, a masterpiece of masonry skills and aesthetic materials, was a singular work at the time. It resolutely survived earthquakes in 1906 and 1989, and is a grand architectural artifact in San Francisco history.

Bourn II had roots in the Empire Mine near Grass Valley, founded by his father William Bowers Bourn. After his father’s passing in 1874, Bourn II guided the revitalization of the lucrative mining company and other financial interests. The family fortune grew enormously. Bourn II was president of the utility company that would become Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), and president of the Spring Valley Water Company (SVWC) that supplied and distributed water to five counties in the Bay Area. SVWC eventually was sold to a government entity. Bourn II developed many projects, often with architect Willis Polk. A notable property down the peninsula is Bourn’s massive estate, “Filoli.” The name is derived from the first two letters of each word in Bourn’s motto: “Fight, Love, Live.”

Bourn Mansion today is privately owned and lovingly preserved to be a faithful historical representative of its young and maturing region during a transitional turn-of-the-nineteenth-century.

Bourn Mansion is a four story, 9 bedroom, 7 bath mansion that features 27 total rooms including grand entertaining spaces, luxurious living areas, and ornate detailing throughout. Its interior now appears virtually unchanged from initial construction. Original features include a richly carved staircase, oak hardwood floors, and mahogany and redwood paneling. When restoration work is needed, initial construction is matched as closely as possible.

The first floor serves as the main entry into the mansion. Beautiful mahogany doors open into the entry foyer. Notice the vaulted, hand-gilded gold ceiling. It is believed to simulate a rich mineshaft from Bourn’s Empire Mine. Directly off of the entry foyer to the right is an elegant Ladies Sitting Room featuring paneled walls and decorative molding. To the left is a Gentleman’s Den. Here, you’ll find hand-chiseled redwood planked flooring and ceiling beams, and a brownstone fireplace that provides a rustic setting. At the end of the entry foyer, a hand-carved Grand Staircase connects each level of the building. The first floor also has a Laundry/Fitness Room, Gourmet Kitchen, full Pantry/Prep Area, and Manager’s Suite with bathroom.

The second floor is the main entertainment level. The Grand Staircase leads to a large central Reception Hall that is entirely encased in a hand-painted mural by American painter and sculptor, Bruce Porter. It connects to the Formal Sitting Room, the Ballroom, and the Dining Room. The Formal Sitting Room has redwood paneling and a fresco ceiling of pastel and gilding. There is an extravagant Ballroom at the front of the mansion that is highlighted with ornate crown moldings, a carved Italian marble fireplace, large Corinthian columns, and a balcony that overlooks Webster Street. The Dining Room is surrounded by mahogany paneling and ceiling beams. Adjacent to the fireplace in the Dining Room, the Conservatory has an arch-shape ceiling, abundant daylighting with massive leaded-glass windows, and direct access to an outdoor terrace.

ON TOPIC:
This blogger would like to thank the talented and gracious owners of this magnificent San Francisco property for their much appreciated time, efforts, information, and hospitality that has made possible this brief article and a very meaningful experience at the mansion by a fortunate small group of people.

The Geary Theater in San Francisco

(Excerpt) "Hailed as the 'perfect playhouse,' the beautiful Geary Theater has been our home since the beginning. When the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake ripped the roof apart, San Franciscans raised a record-breaking $30 million to rebuild the theater. The Geary reopened in 1996..."

Traditional seat of legitimate drama in San Francisco since 1910
(Excerpt) "In the earthquake and fire of 1906, The City lost all eight of its downtown theaters.

Bliss and Faville, one of the most prominent architectural firms in San Francisco, designed the Geary Theater. Construction of the Geary began in 1908, and re-opened on January 10, 1910. It was then known as the Columbia Theater, named after a theater at Powell and Ellis streets, that had been destroyed in the earthquake and fire. ...[Between] 1924 and 1928... the building was known briefly as the Wilkes, and then the Lurie Theatre... reopened as the Geary Theater on February 6, 1928.

In January 1967, the Geary Theater became the permanent home of the American Conservatory Theater [ACT], which bought the building in 1974. In 1975, the Geary was awarded a place on the U.S. Department of the Interior's NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES and was named a LANDMARK of the State of California and the City and County of San Francisco."

(Excerpt) "Almost 98 percent of the space in a salmon farming pen is is water and just 2 percent is fish... Norway was the first country to develop fish farms, back in the 1970's... The Norwegian government is very particular and protective about the farmed salmon environment... [salmon] feed and [sea water] environment is constantly being monitored... All the farming sites are monitored during and immediately after a cycle is over... veterinarians come in and regulate to ensure healthy fish."

Thankful for this Hotel

Tomorrow, this will be posted on a wire mesh "tree" in the lobby. It will be with many crowded together notes on paper. Not many will see it, less will actually read it, and maybe a few will think they might see some meaning from their own perspective -- it's about joy!

Thankful for:
The good health
time and type of wealth, to...

Enable
this visit to
this place to
this time to...

Share Christmastime
with pleasant doormen
circling pigeons
The City
you...

And most our family,
if for a moment
a short conversation
heartfelt in busy lives...

Being here
at Christmastime.

Migrant Refugee Housing: Swedish summer houses?

Swedes with summer houses may rent to migrant refugees
(Excerpt) "Sweden’s generous asylum and migration policies have led to chronic housing shortages over the decade. The nation of under 10 million people admitted over 160,000 non-EU migrants last year, exacerbating the problem. Swedish public housing organisation SABO reports that almost half a million new homes must be built in the country just to meet demand."

2016 SF Giants: 4 in 7 World Series Champions?

Giants miss the post-season playoffs in 2011, 2013, and 2015
2015 was the third straight time a San Francisco Giants baseball team followed winning the World Series Championship with a season that did not even put them in the playoffs. This may be a good opportunity to mention that currently there is an even-year run of World Series Championships by a Giants team that includes winning the title in 2010, 2012, and 2014. In 2016, manager Bruce Botchy may see an extention of those consecutive even-year title wins.

Regarding a possible next even-year championship:
(Excerpt:) "... the Giants [in 2016] are looking to once again rely on their tried and true formula of strong pitching and defense and a lineup filled with contact hitters who can pressure the opposing staff... 'Across the infield and outfield, this is as set as we've been and as good a defensive club as I've ever had.'"

Hunter (All-Star) Pence proposes to (now) Fiancee Lexi Cozombolidis
Source (1:45 video): http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:14777142

Hunter and Lexi are optimisitic about their future together. The San Francisco Giants are optimistic about next season -- of course, many can be optimistic at this time in a baseball year.

Perhaps prophetically for the Giants, it takes 4 wins in 7 possible games to win a World Series Championship.

Shoreline Beach Cafe

Santa Barbara, California
On Leadbetter Beach. Our visit to this delightful place to relax and have a meal was on a warm bright sunny day. Our perch was at a table slightly raised above the beach sand on a deck with a mostly glass partition/guardrail facing the Pacific Ocean and Leadbetter Beach. Multi-colored fabric covers the deck for sun protection and designed to allow cooling breezes. It was a great meal and wonderful time together that compelled us to favorably compare it with some similar restaurant locations in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Amtrak California Day Trip: San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara Round-Trip

A one day round-trip. Simple, good times. Fun, in one...

A Casual Day Trip by Train
It's approximately 2-1/2 to 3 hours riding on the train down to Santa Barbara. Then there's seven to eight hours to explore Santa Barbara's downtown and waterfront areas. To end the day trip, it's approximately 2-1/2 to 3 hours again riding on the train back up to San Luis Obispo. This round-trip is fun and can be done in one day.

The Train Schedule
Check the website Amtrak California and source links shown below for published times, fares, and policies. To-the-minute accuracy of schedules may not always be relied upon, if timing is personally important during a casual day trip. One important note to mention: don't miss the train.

6:30AM -- San Luis Obispo Amtrak Station.
Get to station in time to assure boarding before the southbound train departs in the morning. Long term parking is available.

9:24AM  -- Train arrives at Santa Barbara Amtrak Station.

5:15PM -- Santa Barbara Amtrak Station.
Return back to station in time to assure boarding before the northbound train departs in the evening.

5:43PM -- Train departs from Santa Barbara.

8:30PM -- Train arrives at San Luis Obispo Amtrak Station.

Long Term Parking at San Luis Obispo Station (Lot B)
Several days before the trip, it is possible to visit the station to purchased tickets in-person and also be issued a free longterm parking pass. On the date of the day trip, this may somewhat simplify parking a personal vehicle and boarding the southbound train on that morning.

The Meals
There is a "Cafe" on the train attended by one crew member. It has a basic selection and there are a few tables. We wanted to have two meals (one each way) on the train and brought a "food bag" to our seats. We had planned and packed familiar breakfast items (coffee and milk were purchased from the Cafe) plus a few bagged snacks for use later in the day while walking around Santa Barbara. We had lunch in the waterfront area at a very pleasant restaurant (discovered while walking around) with beachside tables on a covered deck. From that restaurant, we bought "to go" boxed meals for our dinner on the train while traveling back up to San Luis Obispo. In this way, the train's coach seats, tray tables, and on-board waste bins accommodated two of our day's meals.

The Scenery and Views
It would be hard to imagine finding a better seat on the train than ANY seat on the right-hand side of the southbound train. Ocean, cliffs, and beaches -- for approximately 70 percent of the train ride. Some of the train's route follows the California coastline through the isolated Vandenberg Air Force Base and other areas that are not seen from major freeways. You may wish that the train windows would open for unfiltered access to take photos.

MTD Santa Barbara: Downtown & Waterfront Electric Shuttles
Two electric shuttle routes are immediately available near to the Amtrak Station in Santa Barbara; the Downtown Shuttle and the Waterfront Shuttle. Adult fare is $0.50 per one-way ride with a one-time free transfer available between these two routes. There are shuttle stops along the nearly continuous pedestrian walkways on both routes. Both the pedestrian walkways and shuttle stops are designed as functional elements of the street architecture. The open-air electric shuttles run on schedules and will pull over for passenger loading and unloading at the designated stops.

The Day: it's all about you.
Our day was Valentine's Day 2015. We found Santa Barbara's downtown and waterfront to be easily walkable, beautiful, and diversely interesting. Sun protection, layered clothing, and a small backpack is advised. There are enough attractions and activities to discover that one may wish for a bit more time. However, the seven or eight hours between Amtrak trains on one pleasant day -- spent exploring on foot and occasionally riding open-air shuttles -- seemed just about right... on our day.

Pharmaborg

Situational awareness...

Proposed new word for lexicographers to consider when adding to English language dictionaries:

pharmaborg: Authentic human; a hybrid with potential longevity, improved physical capabilities, and greater spiritual wellbeing. The pharmaborg's original biology has been modified with scripted symbiotic pharmaceuticals and integrated synthetic mechanical components.

Similar to: cyborg

LIFT (Link I Found Today)

There are five named factions within this series' dystopian but perhaps familiarly imperfect society. "Each [faction] is dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue." They are called:

"Abnegation" -- the selfless
"Dauntless" -- the brave
"Candor" -- the honest
"Erudite" -- the intelligent

The people in this society also include the "Factionless" and the namesake... "Divergent"-- a rare individual possessing personality characteristics and aptitudes of more than one faction.

(Excerpt) "Being Divergent is considered dangerous. Since a Divergent's mind cannot be controlled or made to adapt to one certain way of thinking (at least not for long), faction leaders are terrified as to what Divergent people are capable of."

The Movie: Divergent

Santa's Pen: pineapple ornament

Source: QwkDrw

Personalized Christmas Tree Ornament
This is a tasteful, small (easy packing), tourist-y ceramic trinket that will just always say, "We loved being in Hawaii today!" Okay, there may be more indigenous things available as a souvenir...

But the beautiful star shape carmel colored seed pods from an Autograph Tree will soon shrivel, mildew, look disguising, smell... just saying.
Source: Autograph Tree -- Clusia rosea: seed pods

So, at that time, we were headed out wearing SPF clothing, hats, large sunglasses, and conscientiously applied sunscreen to lollygag for another grueling day along Waikiki Beach and out into Honolulu on foot or by bus. Presently, we were walking through the Outrigger Reef on the Beach Hotel's open-air lobby, poolside deck, and convenience-shopping promenade. As seasoned beachcombers, we briefly posted up in the shade at a hotel provided cold condensation sweating glass and chrome dispenser for iced lemon-slice and mint-leaf water to fill our REI containers. It can be rough out there. And right there, across the tile and carpet indoor/outdoor breezeway, was Santa's Pen -- a little shop that was all at once so out-of-place, and so appropriate.

We shopped. The friendly shopkeeper was a young Hawaiian woman living in Honolulu that would use Santa's permanent ink black pen to personalize by hand a purchased blank item with calligraphic skills. After a bit of time, considering alternatives with the artist's help, we had selected and composed our 40th Anniversary commemorative... Christmas tree ornament -- it will always remind us of our wonderful time together during this vacation, and that we loved being in Hawaii

Seed Pods
Beautiful star shape carmel colored seed pod from the Autograph Tree. This tree is along Waikiki Beach, Hawaii. Someone has scrapped their initials onto a leaf in the upper right of this photo. Reportedly, that "autograph" will permanently remain on that leaf, presumedly even after it falls off the tree. We probably will want to go back sometime, just to verify.

Harmony Bracelet

Good Luck Feng Shui Coin: Used with opposite end loop to clasp Harmony Bracelet around wrist. Flat-weave satin cording color: "Silver Gray represents Dreams, Protection, and Astral Projection," as described in provided literature.

On one side of the coin, "Chinese Characters are part of the Feng Shui system." On the opposite side, "the Phoenix and the Dragon represent Yin and Yang, balance," as described in provided literature.

Stone bead that fastens the brass coin at it's center onto cording is: "Hematite -- blood, circulation, improve relationships, increase intuition, pains, grounding, calming, protection, unclutter the mind," as described in provided literature.

Feng Shui System
Described in the provided literature as: "It is the way of natural arrangement, and is the art of appreciating nature. It teaches you how to live harmoniously."

The Artist: Tiare aka artARi
Multi-genre Artist and Musician from Oahu, artARi is selling her art and music online, including these "Harmony Bracelets," at this Esty store: artari artARi808 Artari

We purchased our TWO Harmony Bracelets in June 2014 near Sunset Beach on the North Shore of Oahu at the North Shore Country Market. The Artist, a lovely talented young woman, maintains a vendor's booth here. In addition to her uniquely detailed drawings/paintings (think: thousands and thousands of brush point dots), she crafts various designs of these "Harmony Bracelets," writes and publishes music, and sells her art online at this Esty store: artari artARi808 Artari.

The Artist also creates visual interpretations (read: paintings) of rescued ancient Hawaiian pictographs... oh the stories, my goodness! Hawaiian-themed hotels at least should be given the opportunity to take a look at her individual works to consider adapting them large-scale into their decor. In my opinion, her uniquely detailed interpretations of ancient Hawaiian symbol-like figures, in essentially storyboard-type paintings, have a high probability to be commercially viable if adapted for use in large textile applications (think: hotel bed spreads, bed throws, or other high-value cloth items.) The pictograghy rocks!

North Shore Country Market
(Excerpt) "The North Shore Country market is a great place to gather, get fresh produce, and shop for your gift items. In addition to supporting the local economy, fresher food from local sources tastes better, has more nutrients, and contributes to the total health of the community. Shop early. You will find the best produce selections in the morning, so try to get there when the market first opens."

Tangential or Deeper Meanings
Personally, the bracelet gives me pleasure because it is a wonderful reminder of the North Shore. And it's easy to carry on an airplane. It also appeals to me based on texture, color, uniqueness, comfort when worn around my wrist, and how very well it's made. Tangential or deeper meanings possibly suggested by artist or context may be somewhat curious or interesting... but some may also be easily set aside as inapplicable.

Grass Skirt Grill - Haleiwa, Hawaii

Grass Skirt Grill: on the North Shore of Oahu

Ono fish (long vowel sound /o/; twice. O-no): the name
We had a lot of fish for dinner -- specifically grilled fish. Let me tell you all the kinds of fish in a minute. But first, this story about the name of the Ono fish.

As told to us by the Grass Skirt Grill big kahuna: "In some current usage of Hawaiian language, 'ono' may be used to mean 'delicious.' You can say a pineapple is ono. Or, that you had an ono shave ice. A thousand years ago Hawaiians were catching the Ono fish in waters around Hawaii. And to this day that fish still carries the name; the Ono fish is delicious fish." The Grass Skirt Grill big kahuna also commented that we were an A-okay couple for being married to each other for 40 years.

Other fish that we've eaten recently may have interesting names -- Mahi Mahi, Monchong, Salmon, Ahi -- but none can claim to be named "delicious" in Hawaiian.
